Wine clubs have been created for a wide variety of reasons. Some clubs have been formed for the purpose of getting volume discounts on wines. Another popular reason for wine clubs is that members want to be exposed to new wine types, vintages or vineyards on a monthly basis. One of the biggest drivers, however, of wine club growth is the social networking that comes from enjoying wine with like minded individuals.

Wine clubs provide a unique forum for a wide variety of information about different wines from around the world. There are wine clubs in virtually every country in the world devoted to virtually every type of wine imaginable. There are wine clubs in the US focused on Italian, French and Australian wines. Likewise there are wine clubs in France, Italy and Australia that specialize in California wines. Wine clubs are an excellent way to be exposed to a variety of wines from knowledgeable sources.

Some wine clubs are as new as ten minutes ago, others started over 100 years ago. Often the experts that found or join these clubs are equal in knowledge and experience, regardless of the age of the clubs. From these experts comes advice about wine glass preparation, tasting methods or home wine making tips along with recommendations for the best red wine, white wines or dessert wines.

If you are a fan of a certain winery, you may be able to find a wine club devoted to it. These wine clubs are sometimes fully supported (or even started by) the winery. When you join a winery based wine club, you may receive special benefits such as advance notice of new products and special invite-only tastings.

At the other end of the spectrum are wine clubs that are devoted to variety. Some clubs include only members that have tasted over one hundred different wines. Wine clubs that focus on variety are a great way to become familiar with a diverse set of wines from many different countries and wineries. They provide an enjoyable way to learn about new (to you) wine types.

The ease of sharing information worldwide and almost instantaneously, made possible by e-mail and the Internet, has produced a cornucopia of opinions about every aspect of wine. Debates rage about best vintage, pairing, vineyards, pros and cons of soil and climate types and on and on. Passions around political disagreements pale beside this United Nations of wine.

Fortunately, no wars have recently broken out, (some historians assert the influence of the grape is responsible in part for more than one!), but there are occasional skirmishes. Still, next time you’re invited to attend that special event honoring the ‘premiere’ of a new wine, leave the Kevlar vest at home. Just be prepared with some oenological (the study of wine) ammunition – and don’t forget, the purpose is to enjoy!
